Did you know that CoQ10 can speed up your metabolism, boost your energy levels, slow down the aging process and help you exercise longer?

CoQ10 is found in its highest concentrations in the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas.

Foods such as beef, soybean oil, sardines, mackerel and peanuts are higher in CoQ10.  Low blood levels of CoQ10 have been found in people with various types of cancer and chronic diseases including heart conditions, Parkinson’s disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, periodontal disease and HIV/AIDS.  In addition, some prescription drugs, such as statins, may lower CoQ10 levels.  Natural CoQ10 levels decrease with age.

Coenzyme q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a naturally-occurring fat-soluble compound found in every cell in the body.  It plays a key role in producing energy in the mitochondria, the part of a cell responsible for the production of energy in the form of ATP.

It was first discovered by Professor Fredrick L. Crane and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Enzyme Institute in 1957.

In 1972, Gian Paolo Littarru and Karl Folkers separately demonstrated a deficiency of CoQ10 in human heart disease.

Dietary Sources:

Meat and fish are the richest source of dietary CoQ10 and levels over 50 mg/kg can be found in beef, pork and chicken heart, and chicken liver.  Vegetable oils are also quite rich in CoQ10.  Parsley and perilla are the richest vegetable CoQ10 sources.  Broccoli, grape, and cauliflower are modest sources of CoQ10. Most fruit and berries represent a poor to very poor source of CoQ10, with the exception of avocado, with a relatively high CoQ10 content.

After age 35, the body produces less CoQ10, which can lead to a weakened immune system and feeling less energetic.  The fact that the body produces less CoQ10 when getting older could be linked to the aging process itself.

Why People Take Coenzyme q10 Supplements:

  1. Alleviate some types of migraine headaches
  2. Reduce the progression of Parkinson’s Disease
  3. Maintain / heal the heart and cardiovascular system
  4. Cancer
  5. Reduce blood pressure
  6. Treat periodontal or gum disease (CoQ10 works by inhibiting bacterial growth due to improved oxygen metabolism at the cellular levels.)
  7. Neutralize free radicals
  8. Strengthen the immune system
  9. Diabetes
  10. Increase energy levels
  11. Anti-aging
  12. Breast cancer
  13. Mental alertness
  14. Reduce radiation injury
  15. Regenerate other antioxidants such as Vitamin E
  16. Kidney failure

Importance of Fat Soluble Molecules like Coq10:

Many people who have had their gall bladders removed, had bariatric surgery or who have compromised immune systems; have digestive problems, gluten intolerance or major health issues such celiac disease, Crohn’s or cystic fibrosis, have a difficult time absorbing fat soluble molecules, such as Coenzyme q10, which further hinders their ability to heal from their conditions.

How to Buy CoQ10 Supplements:

Coq10 supplements vary widely in price and quality.  Interestingly, only 10-30% of most supplements, including liquid supplements, are absorbed.  (Remember, fat soluble molecules like Coq10 can be the most difficult to absorb.)  It’s not unusual to spend more than $50 per month for what’s thought to be a high quality supplement and still only have limited absorption.

When it comes to nutrition, it’s not just what you eat, it’s what you absorb.  (In other words, you can be eating a very clean, pure diet, but absorbing very little of it.) Fortunately, there is a new Swiss technology, called VizPur, which makes CoQ10 and other fat soluble nutrients more absorbable, actually water soluble, with a newly stabilized, patented micelle process.  The process is designed to dramatically increase absorption of fat soluble nutrients, such as Vitamin E and Vitamin D3 and Omega 3, up to 90%!   Many people who used to have health disorders related to fat soluble nutrient deficiencies are already noticing tremendous improvements in their health because of these new Swiss technology water soluble products!  (Have you noticed how most health solutions seem to come back to water?  ”Viz” actually means “water” in Hungarian!)

Coconut Oil- the Forgotten Critical Super Food

Coconut oil was commonly used in the U.S. until the 1950s.  In spite of new evidence showing that coconut is, among other things, an inexpensive and important source of nutrition and healing, many still falsely believe that coconut is a dangerous food due to its high saturated fat content.

According to Dr. Jerry Tennant, M.D., an expert in healing chronic disease and terminal illness, coconut is “very useful in rehabilitation of a sick liver”.  And, “There is no relationship whatsoever between the amount of saturated fat eaten and the levels of blood cholesterol.”  “Highly saturated tropical oils such as coconut . . . are not harmful, as the popular press would lead us to believe.  These fats and oils have nourished healthy populations, free of heart disease, for millennia.”

Did you know that, among other benefits, coconut oil is antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial?  There is even a Coconut Research Center!  Coconut oil is even rich in minerals, which makes it alkalizing.

Coconut oil is also . . . .

* Good for the Heart: The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful like they are in other vegetables oils. Coconut oil does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.

Good for Weight Loss: It is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting because it contains lesser calories than other oils.  (Its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries.)  Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.  It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight.  Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.

* Good for the Immune System: It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV

* Good for Healing: When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.

* Good for Fighting Infections: According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.

* Coconut is also good for beauty/anti-aging, diabetes, bones, dental care, cancer and more.  Visit http://www.organicfacts.net/organic-oils/organic-coconut-oil/health-benefits-of-coconut-oil.html to learn more.  (It’s good for so many things, it reminds of us the Greek father in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” who was always saying, “Just put some Windex on it!”) :-)

Tip: if you love grilled cheese sandwiches, try cooking yours in coconut oil for an unbeatable texture and flavor!  Yum!

(We will discuss more about how to add coconut oil to your lifestyle in future blogs.)
